Down through the ages millions of people have lived miserably because they believed in a god or gods. Most wars, destruction of lives and property has been due to people's longing for and belief in gods invented by ignorant and/or dishonest men. Even today, with every proof against a power greater than that of our own species, people believe in dishonest ministers who cheat them of their money and time. These ministers, priests, pastors, preachers have never read the whole of the Bible they claim is the word of their god. Yet, they threaten their congregations with punishment for not following its teachings. Even so, you can't expect a minister to admit he's an atheist or a mental defective, or both. It's his livelihood. He has a flock of sheep to shear and nothing anyone can say will make him admit he's working a lifetime, tax-free racket. So we can understand why such frauds as Pat Robertson, Benny Hin, Jerry Falwell, Billy Graham, etc., pretend to having read the Bible and even believe it. And of course, they all, as well as the local ministers, encourage their flocks to read the Bible. But they don't tell them to read it all. They encourage them, in their Bible studies, to read only those parts which back up their own belief systems. But why does the lay-believer, the one who puts his money in the plate, accept a book he believes is the word of his god but which he will not read entirely? It all has to do with programming. Let's say you are a typical lay-believer. As a little child, too young to read or reason, your mommy told you the Bible was the word of a god. It was all true and you had to believe it because those who didn't believe it were bad and would be punished forever and ever. You are totally dependent on her and believe everything she tells you, since she believes it, having been programmed as she programs you. The people you were closest to, especially those in church, backed up her programming, since they had been similarly programmed. So you grew to adulthood, finally reading, as directed, "He that believeth and is baptized shall be saved; but be that believeth not shall be damned". Mark 16:16. So you read bits of the Bible but never dared read the whole book, lest what you found there proved that it could not have been inspired by a higher being. Imagine that you had an Uncle Max. You've never met him but you've been told from childhood that Max is rich and powerful and loves you and if you believe in your Uncle Max he will, at some future time, give you a fortune. But if you don't believe in Max he will reject you and ruin your life. Then a friend presents you with Uncle Max's record. Max is a fraud and an idiot. He has nothing to give and he has no power over you. In fact, Max is in Louisiana in the lockup for the criminally insane, for life. You acknowledge that your friend has Max's record but you won't read it. You've been too-well programmed. No matter what, you are still hoping for something for nothing and are still in fear of what everyone told you of Uncle Max's power. You're like the inmate in the asylum. An attendant goes into his room and finds him naked, but wearing a top hat. The attendant asks him why he's naked and he replies that no one ever comes to see him. He's then asked why the top hat? He replies, "You never can tell, somebody might". Mom's programming never took with me. I loved her but considered her silly. All the big people in the Church of Christ were silly. I liked the church because it was funny. As I grew older, I became increasingly interested in why people were so silly. I was sort of like Puck saying, "What fools these mortals be". As time went on I became a practical atheist as opposed to a militant atheist. A practical atheist is one who exposes frauds who use programmed beliefs to exploit others. The militant atheist is all too often one who woke up from his programming, and feeling betrayed, lashes out at all those still holding on to their programming. Instead, you should attack those who prey on and reinforce the programming of believers. This is an act of rescue, on the one hand, and punishment of frauds on the other. In 1973 I published my book, "Keeping Score On Our Modern Prophets". It was an expose of the phonies in the field of the occult. I had joined everything I could and really enjoyed those nut cults. No occult book store would carry it but it got Jeane Dixon banned from "Rising Sign", a leading astrology publication. I sent a copy to Mom. She never read anything but the Bible and didn't read my book. But since her second-begotten son had written it she was proud and gave it to an old lady friend in her church. A few days later I got a letter from the old lady. It was four pages written with a pencil. She took me to task for writing a book holding religion up to ridicule. If I didn't believe the Bible I shouldn't oughter write agin it. I sent her a short note saying if she believed the Bible she should empty the enclosed packet of potassium cyanide into her tea. It would not hurt her, according to Mark 16:17-18. I knew she wouldn't take it or I wouldn't have sent it. A couple of days later I got a phone call from my enraged mother. She did everything but swear at me. I had thought it was a clever joke but I had hurt two simple persons. I wouldn't do it again. To debate with the innocently ignorant is not only a waste of time but cruel. You should target the obnoxious know-it-alls who use their own beliefs to abuse others. Also, those who come to your door are fair game. Your best opponent is a Bible bandit who has a flock of sheep to shear. If you can engage him in a debate before his followers, you can really shine and maybe even do some good. Of course, you must have the right ammunition. If you tell a believer simply that you're not a believer, that makes his day. That means to him that you're going to Hell and so he's better than you. What you've got to do is to show him that what he believes is garbage. Take his god, for instance. We've all heard of the three omnis; omni-present, being everywhere at once. Omnipotent, able to do anything. Omniscient, knowing everything, past, present and future. These would be the qualities of a real god. Believers say this describes their god. But if he's everywhere, why doesn't he show himself? If he can do anything, why doesn't he do something? If he knows everything, why doesn't he enlighten us? Believers say he leaves all that up to us because we have free will. But free will to do what? Imagine the head of the Ford Motor Company. He makes policy and passes it on to his managers. The managers pass it on to the foremen and they pass it on to you, the little guy on the line. But what gets passed on are instructions from the time Henry Ford had a bicycle shop. So how are you, the little guy, supposed to follow Ford's memos handed down a hundred years ago when the company doesn't even make bicycles any more? In short, why doesn't he update his commands? Goodness knows he has the radio, TV and even the Internet, plus hundreds of thousands of clergy who claim to have gotten their calling from him to spread his word. There are at least 1200 self-styled Christian sects in this country alone, each claiming to have the only truth, or the message nearest to the truth. Which is right, if any, and how are you obligated to know what to do, with all your free will? Could free will have prevented the Columbine massacre? And was their god there? A young black athlete was killed. Days later a mostly black church held services for him. The congregation of 5000 was singing the praises of a god, which if it had existed, or if it cared, could have stopped the killing with a thought. Or maybe it was the boy's guardian angel who slipped up. The popular TV show, "Touched By An Angel" has millions convinced that everyone has a guardian angel. When little Jon Benet Ramsey was sexually abused, tortured and murdered, where was her angel? You might ask the obnoxious one or the Bible bandit; if his god exists and has the three omnis, why has he been such a failure from the beginning? He failed with Adam and Eve. He failed with Cain and Abel. He failed with the Tower of Babel. He failed with the Great Flood. He failed to make the descendants of Abraham a great nation, as promised in Genesis 12:1-3. Then in 2 Kings 17:6-23 he gave up on the Ten Tribes of Israel, about 724 B.C. In 2 Kings 21:10-16, about 642 B.C., some 82 years later, their god rejected Judah. So for the next several hundred years the prophets went around ranting that if the people got right with their god he would come back. They didn't and he didn't. Then he sent Jesus, who told his twelve apostles, "Go not into the way of the Gentiles (I'm a Gentile), and into any city of the Samaritans (descendants of the Ten Tribes who avoided captivity), enter ye not: but go rather to the lost sheep of the house of Israel". Matt. 10:5-6. "I am not sent but unto the lost sheep of the house of Israel". Matt. 15:21-28. Now, the lost sheep weren't lost physically; they were lost to the promise. Jesus was sent to bring them back into the fold. They rejected him. He didn't bring them back into the fold. They gave him over for crucifixion. His last words on the cross were, "My god, my god, why hast thou forsaken me?" Matt. 27:46. Another version of the story from Matt. 15:21-28 has a Greek woman, a Syrophenician, begging Jesus to heal her daughter. She was a native of Syria in the province of Phoenicia. The only way she could have been identified as a Greek, a descendant of Alexander's colonists 300 years before, was that she was white, or at least lighter than the darker Syrians among whom she lived. Jesus was in the house of some Syrians, so they must have been Syrian Jews. The writer of one or both accounts obviously didn't like white people (I'm white) and so had Jesus equate us to dogs. We have no way of knowing if Jesus said anything like that. But two stories saying he did, at least shows that he and those closest to him did not include white Gentiles in their flock. At least, not while he was alive. So here was a woman with a sick little daughter, who believed in him, begging for his help. He not only shows contempt but is insulting and cruelly abusive. Would any believer deny he said what both stories related? Moreover, she humbled herself before him, admitting she and her daughter were on the level with dogs and he then healed her daughter. This does not make up for the fact that he was not a good man and thus unfit to be seen as any sort of higher being. Feel free to copy this and pass it around.
